Syria backs Iran nuclear program

Tehran, January 06:As the US is trying to convince Western powers to impose fresh sanctions against Iran, Syria’s Parliament speaker expresses support for Tehran’s nuclear program.

“Iran has an undeniable right to peaceful nuclear energy,” Mahmoud al-Abrash said in an address to the Iranian Parliament Wednesday.

He said Damascus attests to the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear activities.

He pointed to cooperation between Iran and Syria on different international issues and said that enemies of the Muslim world are doomed to failure.

The United States and Israel accuse the Islamic Republic of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear pursuit.

After imposing three rounds of unilateral sanctions against Iran, the US rallied its European allies — Britain, France and Germany — to coerce the UN Security Council into pressuring Tehran to desert its program.

Iran, a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and member of the UN nuclear watchdog, is entitled to pursue the technology for civilian purposes. It has also urged nuclear powers to abandon their atomic arsenals as the government in Iran believes the use of weapons of mass destruction is inhuman.

“Since the revolution, Iran has played a key role in establishing security and stability in the region,” said the Syrian Parliament speaker. “It has resisted the pressure of foreigners and the US in particular in regional and international affairs.”

Al-Abrash underlined that the West’s hostility towards Iran stems from the just political stance of Tehran.

“This is the reason that it hatched plots against the Islamic Republic,” he said.
