Syed Sibtey Razi sworn in as Assam Governor

Guwahati, July 27: Syed Sibtey Razi was on Monday sworn in as Governor of Assam.

Gauhati High Court Chief Justice J Chelameswar administered the oath to Razi at a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here.

Razi, who earlier was governor of Jharkhand, succeeded Shiv Charan Mathur who passed away in New Delhi on June 25.

Hailing from Rai Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, 70-year-old Razi, had a brief stint as union minister of state for home affairs between 1995 to 1996 and also discharged duties as governor of Orissa from July one to July 19 this year.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, his cabinet colleagues, Director General of Police G M Srivastava, top army and civil officials and president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Bhubaneswar Kalita were present.

Razi told reporters after the ceremony that his first duty would be work for the welfare of the people of the state. Asked about the continuance of the grievance cell for people set up by his predecessor, he felt there was no need for it as there was a full-fledged government in the state.
