Swiss tourist rape 6 gets life

6 Indian men accused in the gang-rape of a 39-year-old Swiss woman on a cycling vacation have been sentenced to life in jail.

They had been heading towards Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal, but stopped near the village of Jhansi, setting up camp about 500 yards from the road. The men, aged between 22 and 30, all from a village near the campsite, tied up the man and raped the woman in his presence.

While all six were jailed for life on Saturday, reports say one of them was convicted of assaulting and robbing the couple, rather than the rape itself.

Four months after a Swiss tourist was robbed and gang-raped, a fast-track court in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh today awarded life imprisonment to all the six convicts in the sensational case.
The DIG informed that the Madhya Pradesh government had sanctioned Rs 8.5 lakh towards travel cost of the victim.
