Geneva, September 24: Swiss lawmakers have quashed plans to contribute troops to a European Union anti-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.
The 102-81 vote in parliament against the deployment on Thursday reflected widespread concern that sending troops would violate Switzerland’s long-standing neutrality.
The coalition government had argued for joining the EU mission, saying Switzerland should do its part to protect Swiss cargo ships and U.N. aid deliveries.
The government had hoped the mission would help boost relations with other European countries, who have criticized Swiss banks for helping tax evaders hide their money.
