Kuala Lumpur, August 10: Six more persons died of flu in Malaysia raising the toll related to the virus to 32, the Health Ministry said.
The six dead are among the 203 new cases reported today, taking the total number of infected persons in the country to 1,983.
Health Ministry Director General Ismail Merican said that, except for one case, postmortem report of the other five dead revealed they had the flu virus. He said four of them had underlying risk factors.
Meanwhile, the Government is considering tough measures to curb the spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus. Premier Najib Razak has said he would meet Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai to discuss the need for tighter measures and more drastic steps that the Government should take on this matter.
He said that while some public events and gatherings were necessary, others would be cancelled if the situation called for it.
Globally, 208,155 people have been found to be infected by the virus and 1,688 people from 174 countries have died so far.
