Swaraj India to continue it’s public campaign against liquor vends in residential areas
New Delhi : Welcoming the Delhi Government’s decision to close two liquor shops in Rohini after protests from local residents, Swaraj India Leader Anupam announced that the public campaign against vends in residential areas will continue across Delhi. It must be noted that the shops were closed by the government authorities after local residents from Rohini complained of it being a source of public nuisance.
This can be seen as an impact of Swaraj India’s continuous campaign against the flawed anti-people liquor policy of Delhi government in general and proliferation of liquor vends in residential areas in particular. The public campaign which began in August 2016 by Swaraj Abhiyan with the support of citizens from several parts of the national capital has forced the government to close down liquor shops in the past. The party has recently announced that its public campaign against such liquor vends will now be taken forward by the Mahila Swaraj Morcha, party’s newly formed women front.
It is worth reminding the Delhi government that liquor vends becoming a source of public nuisance and harassment is not a problem limited to just two vends of Rohini. The menace is widespread throughout the national capital and the government has aggravated the menace by granting licenses at will during the initial part of it’s tenure. Swaraj India expects that the decision taken in Rohini is replicated throughout the National capital, wherever liquor vends exist in residential areas. The complaints, protest and finally the voting down of vends in Rohini proves yet again that vends in residential areas which have become a major source of public nuisance, needs to be immediately shut in the spirit of Swaraj.
Talking about the Party’s future plans regarding this campaign, Swaraj India Chief Spokesperson and Delhi State President Anupam said, “We will continue our public campaign against the presence of liquor vends in residential areas. The government’s decision should not be limited to just two vends of Rohini when the problem is so deep rooted & widespread across Delhi.”
Anupam also said that the party will continue to hold public meetings under the leadership of Mahila Swaraj Morcha and bring to light such liquor vends which have been opened against the will and consent of the local residents. He hoped that the Delhi government will extend similar cooperation in closing down such vends as it did in Rohini.
