Swami Nithyananda’s court yatra ends in hospital

Bangalore, April 27: Self-styled godman Paramahamsa Nithyananda was on Monday admitted to the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology on Bannerghatta Road, after he complained of chest pain.

Nithyananda was being brougt back to the city after producing him before the additional civil judge (senior division) at Ramanagara, when he developed chest pain.

Doctors attending to the tainted swami expressed satisfaction over his health condition and said an echo cardiogram (ECG) test revealed normal heart condition. However, he was kept under observation, and would undergo a treadmill test on Tuesday morning.

“He will be under observation till the doctors certify him fit to travel,” superintendent of police (CID) KN Yogappa said.

Earlier, additional civil judge justice Narayana Prasad extended the police custody of Nithyananda for two more days till April 29. The swami’s disciple, Nithya Bhaktananda, aka Gopal Seelam Reddy, was sent to judicial custody. Both the men were produced before the court around 4.30 pm under tight security, after their four-day remand period ended on Monday.

Assistant public prosecutor NR Lokesh submitted before the court that the CID wanted to question him for four more days, as the investigators were awaiting the technical report on the compact discs from the FSL in Hyderabad.

He argued that several witnesses, including a Tamil actress, were yet to be interviewed.

The high court of Karnataka would hear a bail application filed by HS Chandramouli, the swami’s counsel, on April 29.

In a separate but related development, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of Art of Living Foundation, said in a statement from Cincinnati, US, that Nithyananda had violated the UNAIDS guidelines as well as rules of tantra.

Ravi Shankar said Nithyananda’s act had traumatised several people, who had reposed faith on him.
