Yangon, July 1: A spokesman for Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi says the pro-democracy leader will make her first trip into the countryside since her release from house arrest last November.
Hantha Myint said Friday that Suu Kyi will make a private four-day visit to the ancient city of Bagan with her youngest son, Kim Aris, who is visiting from Britain.
Suu Kyi is expected to make a separate trip to meet supporters in the weeks ahead, State media has warned that those plans could trigger riots.
The 66-year-old Nobel Peace laureate has spent much of the last two decades detained by the country’s repressive rulers. She drew large crowds when she last toured the countryside in 2003, but junta supporters ambushed her entourage. She was eventually detained and placed under house arrest.
