Suspended SI dies of ‘depression’

A sub-inspector of police, suspended for ‘suppression’ of Rs 27.5 lakh cash seized during vehicle screening in the run up to Lok Sabha elections last year, allegedly died due to depression today, police said.

51-year-old Govindhan of Mecheri Police station was suspended after he allegedly deposited with election authorities only Rs 7.5 lakh out of Rs 35 lakh cash recovered from a vehicle during a routine check on March 23, 2014 to prevent use of money in the polls, they said.

After several rounds of inquiries by disciplinary committee, the report, likely to indict him, was expected any time, police said.

In these circumstances, Govindhan, said to be suffering from mental depression in the past months, suddenly collapsed and died at his house in Samrajpet village, about 45 km from here, police said.

His body was buried today and further investigation is on in the case, they said.
