Suspected naxalite arrested

Madurai, March 08: A suspected naxalite was arrested today in Varushanadu Hills in Theni district, where an arms training camp was busted in 2007, officials said.

The ‘Hindi-speaking’ stranger was picked up by a special police team that was combing the hills on a tip-off that some naxalites who managed to escape the 2007 police action were again seen in the area.

The “Q” Branch Police, dealing with extremists, were on the look out for eight naxalites, including a woman, Chandra, allegedly involved in conducting the fire arms training camp in Marugamalai area in the Western Ghats near Periyakulam.

“Police are interrogating him on the suspicion that he could be a naxalite, as there was no other reason for him to come to that place,” officials said, adding he was picked up from Valiparai area on the hills.
