Suspected militants kill Sarpanch in Pulwama District

Suspected militants reportedly killed a Sarpanch of the ruling National Conference (NC) party in Jammu and Kashmir”s Pulwama District late on Monday night.

Media reports quoted police, as saying on Tuesday that Ghulman Mohammed Lone, the Sarpanch of Kulpora- Liddermudh Village in Pulwama District was killed late on Monday night.

The district is 53 km south of Srinagar,the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Lone, 47, was shot dead by suspected militants in his house. He was declared brought dead by local hospital authorities.

He had become the Sarpanch of the village after winning the 2011 Panchayat elections.

Police has registered a case and started an investigation into the killing. So far, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of this killing.

Jammu and Kashmir has over 35,000 Panchayat members.As per official figures, over 700 political activists have been killed by militants in the state since 1990.
