On the suspicion that they were in a relationship, a 75-year-old Yousuf was forced to walk down the aisle (marry) 65-year-old widow Jamila by village panchayat in Bijnor as per reports in TOI.
The couple is finding it hard to survive as they are forced to live in a graveyard on the outskirts of the village under the scorching sun since Sunday without a shed and with a few clothes and utensils.
“The nights are even worse,” says Yousuf, who worked as a labourer but has been rendered jobless for the past two days.
“We are too scared to sleep at night and catch up during the day,” he says.
“Some villagers also alleged we killed Jamila’s daughter, who died recently, as she had seen us in an objectionable state. We pleaded that we saw each other as brother and sister but no one listened,” Yousuf said on Monday.
In-charge of Nagina police station acts as if he lacks knowledge about the incident. “We haven’t received any such complaint,” said inspector Surendra Kumar.
