Kabul, November 14: The incident took place near the site of the upcoming four-day assembly of Afghan tribal elders, known as the Loya Jirga.
The attempted attacks come as the Taliban threatened to target the assembly’s participants, gathering to discuss the possibility of a long-term US presence in Afghanistan.
The militants claim that they had received secret documents, outlining security plans for the assembly. Afghan authorities reject the claim as a scare tactic to intimidate participants.
The Loya Jirga is to begin on Wednesday, and is expected to bring together more than 2,000 politicians, tribal elders and community leaders from across the country.
More than 2,800 foreign soldiers, most of them Americans, have lost their lives in Afghanistan since 2001.
The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan occupation.
