New Delhi: Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s husband Swaraj Kaushal is caught in controversy for his tweet about an ongoing plea in Delhi High Court on opposing several petitions requesting marital rape to be considered as a criminal offense.
Swaraj Kaushal who is an ex-governor and also a practicing Supreme Court lawyer has made a controversial tweet which implied his support for marital rape which was widely opposed by many Twitteratis.
It all started after Kaushal tweeted about an ongoing plea in Delhi High Court on opposing several petitions requesting that marital rape is considered as a criminal offence.
Kaushal took to twitter to share an article where the Centre filed an affidavit in the court stating criminalizing marital rape and categorizing it as a criminal offence would destabilize the institution of marriage, and would be easy to harass husbands.
“There will be more husbands in the jail, than in the house” tweeted Kaushal.
Replying to his tweet, Amit Choudary a twitter user asked Kaushal if he was defending marital rape?
“Are you defending marital-rape?” tweeted Amit Choudhary, from the handle @HesperusThinks.
To which Kaushal replied, “There is nothing like marital rape. Our homes should not become police stations”.
His comments have sparked outrage on social media with many people calling attention to the evil atrocities women experience in the society in the face of abusive marriage or domestic violence.
Some ridiculed his tweet saying “A man taking it upon himself to casually dismiss violence directed at women”.
It was after that Kaushal had changed his twitter privacy settings so that his tweets are accessible to only few members but by the time he took action many twitteratis have already taken a screenshot of his controversial tweet.
