Suri’s associate held in extortion case

Hyderabad, December 14: V.V. Madhu Mohan Reddy, a close associate of factionist Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri and an eyewitness in the latter’s killing, has been arrested in an extortion case by the Crime Investigation Department on Tuesday.

The arrest by the Crime Investigation Department has become significant since the name of a Deputy Medical Superintendent of the prestigious Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, G. Sarath Chandra Nagavara Prasad, 56, figured among the list of three other accused in the extortion case. The CID officials probing Suri’s murder and other cases connected to it, however, said they were yet to achieve a breakthrough in nabbing Bhanu Kiran, wanted for the killing of Suri.

The other accused in the extortion case are – Bhanu Kiran, G. Hemalata Reddy and V.V.V. Rao (who died earlier). The case was registered by the Central Crime Station of Hyderabad after Suri’s murder following the complaint of V. Sudheer Reddy, a real estate businessman. The complainant stated that his business partner, late V.V.V. Rao, had approached Suri to settle the dispute they had over a venture involving 220 acres of land at Maheswaram on city outskirts.

Subsequently, the case was transferred to the CID. The Remand Case Diary, copy of which is available with The Hindu, states that V.V.V. Rao had approached doctor Sarath to settle the dispute he had with his partner.

“At that time, Suri, who was in judicial custody, was admitted in NIMS for treatment. Sarath informed about Rao’s issue with Suri and sought intervention,” the investigators said.

Suri’s close acquaintance then, Bhanu Kiran, rang up the real estate businessman and threatened him to settle the dispute or face consequences. Fearing for his life, the businessman eventually registered four plots measuring 1,280 square yards at Pulimamidi village and five acres and 17 guntas of land in Pendyala village of Maheswaram – all worth Rs. 1.06 crore – in the name of Bhanu Kiran.

Later, Bhanu Kiran transferred rights over four acres and 17 guntas of the land to Suri’s close relative Hemalata Reddy.
