Surgeries done properly, patients in good condition: DME

Madurai, August 30: Breast cancer surgeries performed on 14 patients, by a team of doctors in the Oncology Department in Government Rajaji Hospital here, had been done properly and the patients who underwent the surgeries were in good condition, S Vinayagam, Director of Medical Education (DME) said today.

Talking to reporters, after an enquiry with the patients and doctors, the DME said “the doctors did not do the rare task for the sake of finding a place in the guinness book.” They had done it with pure intention and objective to publicise that facilities available at the Government Hospital were very good, he said.

“All the patients are still being attended to properly and are recovering well,” he said, and added that he would submit his report to the government.

Health Secretary V K Subburaj had ordered for an enquiry into the incident to get facts and know if there was any ‘botch up’ while performing the surgeries on August 24.

Incidentally doctors found that the 14 sugeries, done in a record time – three-and-half hours – was a rare and a great feat.

S M Sivakumar, Dean-in-Charge and B K C Mohan Prasad, surgeon and head of the Oncology department were also present during the enquiry.
