Various student unions, intellectuals and professors came together to dem-and that beef be included in the menu of hostels in all the state universities, at a seminar on Democracy and Food Culture held at the Eflu campus on Saturday.
They said that not including beef in menus is violation of basic human rights.
Nowhere in the world, ex-cept in India, food is used as a means of discrimination, they said, condemning the “fascist Hindutva politics” and “undemocratic system” prevailing in secular universities. Government should secularise varsity campuses, they said.
Prof. Kancha Ilaiah, director, CSEI, MANUU, demanded inclusion of beef in the hostel menus. In order to facilitate it, he sought the construction of different messes for people with different food habits. He reiterated the need for a “cultural revolution” in the country against fundamental politics.
