Super specialty campus of NTR varsity to be set up in Mangalagiri

Hyderabad, January 18: Academic, Research and Super Specialty Campus of NTR Health University will be set up in 75 acres in Mangalagiri of Guntur district. The State government was also mulling over to bring a policy on medical education on the lines of Tamil Nadu.

The decision has been taken at a review meeting held by the Chief Minister, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Medical Education in the Secretariat here. The Minister for Health and Medical Education, Dr D L Ravindra Reddy, and the Principal Secretary of Health, Dr P V Ramesh, and other officials attended the review meeting.

Speaking at the media point after the review meeting, the Principal Secretary of Health, Dr P V Ramesh, said that the work burden of NTR Health University, which was set up in 1986 in Vijayawada, tremendously increased due to increased seats in various courses. The number of medicine students under the purview of the university was increased from 6,000 in 1989 to 30,000 presently. The University has to supervise the works and hold the examinations for the students. Keeping in view the increased workload and responsibilities of NTR Health University, the Chief Minister has decided to set up an Academic, Research and Super Specialty Campus at Mangalagiri. A super specialty hospital would also come up there under the project, he added. Required funds and resources would be mobilized from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Union Department of Science and Technology, for the new campus.

“The Chief Minister also sanctioned 75 posts in addition to the existing 140 employees to meet the requirement of human resources in the Health university”, he disclosed.

The Principal Secretary of Health revealed that it was also decided to reconstitute high power committee on status of medical education, teaching standards and faculty matters. The reconstituted committee would be asked to submit its report within four weeks, he added. The committee headed by Vice Chancellor of a university would be set up to suggest measures for rationalization of faculty in medical colleges. The Committee would submit its report to the government within four weeks, he added.

Dr Ramesh said that the government was examining to bring a policy on medical education by next year, if required. The Chief Minister directed the officials to prepare a comprehensive law on medical education by studying the law being in force in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He also instructed the Department to release Rs 55 crores for strengthening of medical colleges in the State. Besides, essential medicines and neo-natal facilities would be provided in the hospitals at a cost of Rs 20 crores, he added.
