Sunstroke toll mounts to 124 as heatwave intensifies

Bhubaneswar, May 11: One more person died of suspected sunstroke in Orissa today, mounting the toll to 124 as searing heat intensified in the state with the western city of Sambalpur recording a maximum temperature of 46.02 degrees Celsius, officials said.

The toll due to suspected sunstroke which stood at 123 yesterday, rose to 124 with one death reported from coastal Jagatsinghpur district, revenue department control room here said.

The return of heatwave conditions yesterday after a brief respite due to rains affected normal life across the state, forcing people to confine themselves indoor.

The highest temperature 46.02 degrees Celsius was recorded at Sambalpur followed by 45.5 degrees at Hirakud, 45.4 degrees at Balangir, 45.02 degrees at Titlagarh and 44.5 degrees Celsius at Jharsuguda, the met office here said.

The state capital recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius as against yesterday’s 40.2 degrees Celsius, the weatherman said.
