Sulking groom vanishes hours before wedding

Hyderabad, May 27: A wedding had to be cancelled hours before the scheduled time as the bridegroom went `missing’ from the house. Police, however, booked the groom for cheating the bride and also demanding dowry as the bride’s father complained that the groom had backtracked as he didn’t get the entire dowry amount in advance.

Chandrajit Yadav, a resident of Srinagar Colony in Bowenpally, was engaged to Swetha, daughter of B Surender Yadav and Neelavathi. The engagement took place on April 12 and the wedding was scheduled to take place at Sri Satya Sai Kalyana Mandapam in Srinagar Colony on Wednesday at 9.15 a.m. In the morning, Swetha’s relatives reached Chandrajit’s house to escort him to the function hall. To their disbelief, the groom’s father told them that Chandrajit had gone for a shave early in the morning and did not return. After waiting till the `muhurtham’ time, the bride’s family realised the foul play.

Surender Yadav lodged a complaint with the Bowenpally police alleging that since he could pay only Rs 11 lakh dowry as against the agreed sum of Rs 20 lakh before the wedding, the bridegroom had avoided the marriage.

Chandrajit’s parents, Balram Yadav and Vijaya Lakshmi, however, maintained that they have no knowledge of their son’s whereabouts. Bowenpally police registered cases under Section 420 (cheating) and also under Dowry Prevention Act against Chandrajit.
