Suicide or honour killing?

Cops suspect the Std IX student from Malwani was murdered by her father and elder sister, because they did not approve of her affair with a 17-year-old boy

The body of a 14-year-old girl was brought to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli on Thursday night by her father, Agaram Jaiswal, who claimed she had committed suicide. But initial investigations by doctors suggested a more sinister truth. The Malwani police suspect the girl was murdered by her father and sister for honour.

According to police officials, they received a call from doctors at the hospital, informing them about the case. Jaiswal told the police that when he returned home, he found his younger daughter hanging from a ceiling fan. However, when cops reached the hospital, they were told by doctors that there were strangulation marks on the girl’s neck.

Love story
Officers from Malwani police station said that on enquiring with the victim’s neighbours, they learnt that the girl, who was a student of class IX, had an affair with a 17-year-old boy. The two had met a few months ago, after the latter came to Mumbai from Delhi looking for a job, and was staying in Malwani since April last year.

The girl’s parents, who were aware of the affair, did not approve of it. On Thursday evening, the boy, who wanted to go to Delhi, requested his girlfriend to lend him some cash for the ticket, “The girl agreed and asked him to come to her house, since her parents were out,” said an officer from Malwani police station.

He added that when the boy went to the girl’s house, her elder sister saw him and informed her father.

Where’s the honour?
Within minutes the girl’s parents reached their house. While the boy escaped through the first-floor window, the girl was allegedly beaten up by her father and sister, “We suspect that to protect the honour of the family, Jaiswal strangulated her and took the body to hospital claiming it to be a suicide,” said an officer.

Malwani police have registered a case of murder. They have detained the victim’s father and elder sister and are conducting investigations.
