Suicide bombing attack 20 killed in Iraq

Baghdad, August 14: At least 20 people died and 35 were wounded in a suicide bombing attack on a restaurant in northern Iraq on Thursday, Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

Security sources said two men burst into the restaurant in town of Sinjar, 110 kilometres north-west of Mosul, and detonated explosive belts attached to their bodies.

The restaurant was a popular meeting place for visitors to the local market. Witnesses said Kurdish militias sealed off streets leading into and out of the town after the attack.

More than 100 people have died during the past week in bomb attacks carried out in Nineveh, the province of which Mosul is the capital.

There has been tension in the region been the Arab majority and Kurdish groups, who want Kurdish-dominated parts of Nineveh to merge with the Kurdish autonomous region of northern Iraq.
