Suicide bomb attack on Kabul restaurant popular with foreigners kills 14

A suicide bomb attack on a restaurant in Kabul has reportedly resulted in deaths of 14 people. The restaurant in the Afghan capital has been popular with foreigners as it is located in Kabul”s Wazir Akbar Khan area, which is home to a number of foreign embassies and organizations.

According to the BBC, among those killed in the attack on the Taverna du Liban, include an IMF representative from Lebanon and a Briton. The UN said that four of its staff was missing. Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Ayoub Salangi said that a suicide attacker detonated his explosives outside the gate of the restaurant and later two gunmen entered the restaurant and started firing at people inside. Salangi said that four women were among those killed, along with the restaurant”s well-known owner.

The report said that the attackers were eventually shot dead by the security forces when they arrived at the scene. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had been deliberately targeting foreign officials. Security remains a major concern in the war-torn Afghanistan even as the US is pushing President Hamid Karzai to allow some US troops to stay behind after the remaining NATO-led forces withdraw by year-end, the report added.
