Thane (Maha): A couple from Bhiwandi allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping in the Masunda lake here today but their bid failed as a lensman who was passing by alerted the authorities, police said.
Twenty-one-year-old Megha Raicha and Vinod Waghmare, residents of Parnaka and Panjrapole in Bhiwandi, who had fled from home and eloped on January 27, came to the lake this evening, an official at Naupada police station said.
They took a rowing boat and sailed out at 5 PM. They had an heated argument in the boat, following which they tried to kill themselves by jumping in the water, one after another, he said.
Lensman Deepak Kurkunde, who was passing by the lake-side on his bike, saw the couple jumping and immediately alerted life guards at the lake and the management, the officer said.
The life-guards rescued the duo, who were rushed to the Thane civil hospital. Hospital authorities said that the duo was out of danger.
According to police, no case in this connection has been registered so far.
