Sudanese student dies in airport road mishap

Hyderabad, April 15: A Sudanese student, returning from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad after receiving a friend, died in a road accident on the airport road on Wednesday morning. Mohd Ahmed (24) from Al Haseesi had been pursuing a computer course at a private institute at Banjara Hills for the past three months. He had been staying at Toli Chowki.

Ahmed and his friend Nayeemuddin, also a Sudanese, went to the RGIA on two motorcycles early in the morning to receive their friend arriving from Sudan.

According to Nayeemuddin, they had received their friend and sent him to the city by a taxi. Later, they took out their bikes from the parking lot and headed towards Chandrayangutta. But soon Nayeemuddin, who was way behind Ahmed, heard a screeching sound. A few yards down the road, he saw Ahmed lying on the ground with head injuries.

Ahmed was shifted to hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The body was moved to the Osmania general hospital for autopsy and later embalmed and preserved in the mortuary.

The Embassy of Sudan has been intimated about the death of their national, police said.

Though police suspect that Ahmed might have skidded off his bike and fell down, they registered a case under Section 304-a (rash and negligent act) and are investigating whether Ahmed’s bike was hit by any vehicle.

Fire at airport

A minor fire was reported in the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad on Wednesday. Airport officials, however, dismissed the incident as a `scare’ following a routine act of burning of scrap on the premises.

According to reports, fire broke out in the bushes some distance away from the radar unit. The fire, however, was extinguished within minutes.

Reacting to the reports, a spokesperson of GMR RGIA said, “Media personnel came to the airport anticipating that a Pakistani minister was arriving to attend Sania Mirza’s wedding reception. They saw the airport staff burning scrap some two kilometres away from the radar unit and flashed it on channels.”

Asked why a fire tender was there at the alleged mishap site, he said it was a practice to keep a fire engine ready when the scrap is burnt. It is a precautionary measure.

No case, however, was registered.
