Sub-Junior Women’s Hockey C’ship: Jharkhand thrash MP 16-0

Hisar: Jharkhand produced a rich vein of form as they crushed Madhya Pradesh 16-0 in their Pool A clash on the sixth day of the 8th Hockey India Sub Junior Women’s National Championship (A Division) here last evening.

Deepika Soreng opened the scoring with the first goal of the match in the seventh minute and ultimately ended being the highest scorer for her side as she scored five goals (7′, 10′, 16′, 20′, 28′). Pramondi Lakra (12′, 27′) and skipper Priya Dungdung (13′, 29′) scored four goals each, Poonam Mundu scored two goals in the 58th and the 68th minutes while Kajal Bara (63′) also scored a goal.

In another Pool A match, Punjab and Delhi played out a 2-2 draw. Delhi’s first goal came very quickly as they scored in the 9th minute, with Manshi being the scorer. However, three minutes later, Punjab found the equalizer as captain Mitali scored in the 12th minute.

Delhi took the lead again in the 28th minute through Deepi but it was again cut short when Punjab’s Chewang Tamang equalized for the second time in the match after 57 minutes.

In the Pool C match, Hockey Him registered their third victory in four matches as they defeated Uttar Pradesh 4-1. The winning side took a comfortable lead in the first half with Kajal scoring a hat-trick of goals in the 4th, 9th and 22nd minutes. Uttar Pradesh’s captain Vinamrata Yadav did pull a goal back in the 66th minute but Hockey Him’s captain Ankita Dahiya scored their fourth goal in the 68th minute to give her side a 4-1 win.

In another Pool C match, Gangpur-Odisha defeated Karnataka 3-1. Gangpur-Odisha took an early lead in the 7th minute as Anjela Toppo scored. In the second half, Gangpur-Odisha secured the win when they scored a second goal in the 53rd minute which was scored by Aten Topno as she converted a penalty corner. Karnataka did pull a goal back in the 60th minute through S P Riuthushree but Gangpur-Odisha’s captain Jyoti Chhatri scored her team’s fourth in the 70th minute to win the match 4-1.

In a Pool D match, Sports Authority of India beat Bhopal 1-0 in a close encounter. Both the teams produced some good hockey to make it a competitive match but it was eventually Sports Authority of India who scored the only goal of the match when Sushmita Panna scored in the 17th minute to give her side a 1-0 lead.

Madhya Pradesh beat Mizoram 4-0 in a Pool B encounter. The victors produced some attacking hockey throughout the match and dominated possession. The first goal was scored by Yogita Verma in the 10th minute which was followed by Hritika Singh’s goal in the final minute of the first half to make the score line 2-0. The second half also witnessed a similar story with Soniya Kumre and Sanskriti Sarwan adding two more goals in the 38th and 39th minutes respectively, making the score line 4-0.
