Study on water quality of two reservoirs

Hyderabad, July 22: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has commissioned a study through the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) on the deteriorating water quality in the Osmansagar and Himayathsagar reservoirs and suggest remedial measures.

Over the years, the quality of water in the Osmansagar has deteriorated. Due to contamination, large-scale growth of algae and turbidity, it has become unfit for human consumption. In fact, the water board stopped supplying water from this reservoir about a month ago as a precautionary measure.

Krishna water is now being supplied to the localities like Mehidipatnam, Masab Tank, Red Hills, Humayannagar, Kakatiyanagar, Vijaynagar Colony, Syed Nagar, MLA Colony, Red Hills, Gunfoundry, Allabanda and Hindinagar that were earlier served by the Osmansagar.

Board officials told Expresso that NEERI took up the study about three days ago. A report would be submitted in about six months.

The study would focus on the sources of pollution, both sewage and industrial, the ill-effects on the two reservoirs, remedial measures to protect them in future and encroachments in the catchment areas. Based on NEERI report, the board would take measures to protect the century-old reservoirs from pollution and encroachments, officials said.

NEERI is a research institute created and funded by the Centre. It falls under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. It focuses on water supply, sewage disposal, communicable diseases and to some extent on industrial pollution. Meanwhile, the water board has also asked some 50 institutions that have come up near the Osmansagar and Himayathsagar reservoirs to have recycling units
