Hyderabad, March 14: Relay hunger strikes and protests rocked the English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) campus today with the students accusing the registrar of misusing his position in appointing staff members.
The protesting students alleged that when the matter was brought to the notice of the adminstration, they were threatened by the police who had entered the campus at the behest of them.
Mohan Tharavath, a Ph.d student of Eflu, said: “Registrar Bapaiah had made ad hoc appointments to the posts of junior assistant officers, peons and attenders without consulting the administration.
These appointments are illegal. I along with other students complained to the vice chancellor and demanded that these appointments be cancelled.
But nothing has been done and hence we have decided to sit on relay hunger strike till the issue is resolved.” He said when the students tried talking with the administration on Friday, police were called in who threatened the students to withdraw the protests.
The students claim that the registrar had misused funds of the college and demanded a thorough probe into it. “Nine months back a student had died as there was no ambulance or a health care unit in the campus.
The administration promised to provide them but till now nothing has been done.
Help was also promised to the family of the deceased and also to the electrician who had died in the campus due to electric shock. These families have not received any help till date,’’ Mohan said.
