Students should be politicised but not politicking: Ramesh Kumar

:“Indian political system has become paralysed and needs serious overhauling. Students should be politicised but they should not resort to politicking”, said Mr Ramesh Kumar, senior congress leader and MLA, Srinivaspura constituency, while addressing students at Students’ Parliament held in Legislatures Home here on February 15.

The programme was organised by Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India to discuss & deliberate on current educational scenario and youth issues with representatives of different political parties. Further discussing on various issues with students, Mr. Kumar opined that students and the youth should come forward and seriously get engaged in discussions and consultation processes with political parties and government. Criticising the current political system he admitted that unfortunately politicians have become a liability on their own people and our political and educational systems are being controlled by capitalists for their vested interests. Answering to a question on increasing privatisation and commercialisation of education, he admitted that it is due to a handful of politicians who themselves own large groups of institutions.

Earlier, delivering the key note address, Mr. Touseef Ahmed, state president, SIO, Karnataka, lamented on the current political and educational scenario. Giving references from recent surveys, he told that by 2020 Hindustan would become Youngistan with national average age being 29 and emphasised on the need of conduction of such discussions and deliberations at district level. By doing this, he said, it would give a sense of belonging and participation among students and youth.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Javed Azam, state working committee member of Social Democratic Party of India, emphasised on students’ participation in democratic processes and the need to follow the mantra of ‘vote for Mr Right’, who should be secular, patriotic, sensible and willing to work for the people. Expressing his pleasure on conducting such a session, Mr Akbar Ali, state president of Welfare Party of India (WPI) congratulated SIO for taking up the task of bridging the gap between campus and society. Lamenting on the indifference by educated people towards society and issues, he stressed on inculcating moral values among youth and students.

Issues ranging from RTE to communalisation and youth unemployment were discussed in the well-attended session. The summary of discussion would be compiled and submitted to political parties, the organisers said. The programme which had participants from across the state and from various backgrounds was moderated by Dr Chandrashekhar Ijoor, researcher National Law School (NLSIU).Courtesy:Karnataka Muslims
