Students protest false cases against T-activists

Hyderabad, February 12: Hundreds of students of science colleges on Osmania University campus boycotted classes, blocked the road and took out a rally in front of the Arts College on Thursday, protesting the false cases registered against students for the violence that broke out during the funeral procession of M Venugopal Reddy.

The students cried foul over the registering of cases allegedly under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the protesters.

Cases were registered against the JAC leaders, professors and student activists after violence broke out on the campus during the funeral procession of MCA student M Venugopal Reddy, who allegedly committed suicide for Telangana.

“When an agitation is going on, how can anyone identify a policeman to be from a particular caste?” the students asked. “Moreover, such charges were levelled against students belonging to a particular section,” students’ JAC leader R Rudra Reddy claimed.

The students also protested against the arrest of a botany research scholar, M Srikanth, by the police on Wednesday.

They claimed that the student was picked up on Wednesday and was not produced before the magistrate even after 24 hours.

“Cases were fabricated on the Telangana students as the pressure by Andhra leaders increased,” the protesters alleged.

Tension eased after the students withdrew their protest once the police reached the spot.
