Hyderabad, January 02: The Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee today said they will go ahead with the Telangana Vidyarthi Garjana at the Arts College on January 3 even as the Government had made it clear that they would not give permission for the rally.
The OU JAC had prop o s e d t o o r g a n i s e Vidyarthi Garjana on January 3 but permission to the same was denied by the Hyderabad Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao.
The JAC leaders today met Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy seeking permission for the Garjana. The request was, however, cold shouldered by the Home Minister.
“The Congress party would be held responsible for any consequences. The Congress is behind the denial of permission to our rally and meeting. They do not want to give students the credit of the movement,’’ JAC member T Srikanth Rao said.
“We will go ahead with the Garjana at any cost,’’ he added. The City Police too decided not to give permission to the programme as it may end up in violence. The student JAC is planning to mobilise more than five lakh students from the 10 districts of the region for the Garjana. The JAC is reportedly planning to approach the High Court to get permission.
Perplexed over the denial of permission, nearly 15 students of PG college, Saifabad staged a protest at the Buddha statue on the Hussainsagar lake and handed over a memorandum to the statue. “Buddha represents peace and we want out Garjana to be a peaceful one. The Government, however, is creating hurdles,’’ JAC leader Naresh said.
Police took nearly 10 persons into preventive custody and shifted them to the Nampally police station while others managed to get away.
Meanwhile, the students continued their protests on the OU campus.
Girl students took out `Bonam’ processions and women from Ramanthapur also took out a Bonalu procession to the Arts College.
The OU students including Kavi Raju and others, who recently sat on a fast and were shifted to hospital as their condition worsened, were today accorded a grand welcome to the campus.
BJP legislator G Kishan Reddy, TDP leader Peddi Reddy and others visited the campus and extended support to the students who are on an relay hunger strike.
