Students do their bit for eco awareness

Ongole, April 23: Members of Generation Next in the town on Friday stood in a pattern to resemble the number ‘350′ with a resolve, to do their bit to bring carbon dioxide emission level to 350 parts per million (ppp) sooner than later. Braving rain, hundreds of students got together in the Jawahar Navodaya school for the unique campaign on the “Earth day” to create awareness among the youth on the great threat faced to fragile mother Earth and the small steps they could take in daily life to fight climate change.

The students of the Akshara school and the Jawahar Navodaya school attended an awareness session held by, among others, locally active environment organisation Bharateeyam led by Mr. E. Bharat and Mr. K. Chaitanya, South Asia Global Campaigns Coordinator at 350.org. On the occasion, Forum for Sustainable Development was formed in Prakasam district.

Like-minded organisations like Bharateeyam, Jana Vignana Vedike, Shanti Vanam, Green Foundation etc., joined the forum to closely coordinate with the campaign for climate change at the global, national and state levels and reach out to communities at the grassroots level to work for sustainable development.

The students at the interactive session quickly grasped how greenhouse gas emissions caused global warming and upset the delicate balance that made live possible on this fragile planet.

The students were told that “many of our everyday activities, like turning lights on, cooking food, or cooling our homes and water, rely on burning the fossil fuels resulting in Co2 emission levels going to 390 PPP.”

They were asked to create awareness among local communities and contribute their bit by taking small but a significant step to fight climate change like planting tree saplings, pedal cycle to school and natural way of cooling water using earthen pots, to cut down on power generated through conventional means.
