Students demonstrate over death of fellow learner

Hyderabad, July 16: Enraged over the death of a fellow learner, students of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Basara held demonstrations and blocked roads forcing Director Rajendra Sahu and Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Narayana to resign.

Third year IIIT student Laxman collapsed in the residential block after consuming food served in the institute mess and was rushed to a private nursing home at Basar, about 400 kms from here. He was diagnosed with diarrhoea and died yesterday allegedly due to lack of proper medication.

The students accused that the management did not pay heed to their complaints against the food served in the mess and held it responsible for the death.

They ransacked the Director’s office and set up roadblocks disrupting traffic movement on Bhainsa-Basar road. Intervention of the police did not pacify them.

The students ended the demonstrations only after the Director and OSD resigned yielding to their demand of resignation.
