Student threatens to throw acid on lecturer

Hyderabad, August 08: In a new dimension to the ongoing harassment of women by lovelorn youngsters, an engineering student was arrested for harassing his former lecturer to marry him.

The lecturer, in fact, had to leave the college unable to bear the harassment but the youth did not relent and continued his chase, police said. The student even threatened to throw acid on the lecturer as she did not respond to his marriage proposal, police said.

The accused, Nikhit Reddy, aged 23, is studying B Tech (electronics) at an engineering college in Moinabad. He fell in love with a lecturer of his college (name withheld), who is a couple of years older to him. The lecturer is married but stays alone in a working women’s hostel at Ameerpet.

“Nikhit Reddy started harassing the lecturer to accept his love and he even proposed to her,” Punjagutta police inspector M Malla Reddy said.

The lecturer, however, refused the proposal.

An unrelenting Nikhit Reddy started to harass the lecturer, who complained to the college management.

In January, as Nikhit Reddy’s harassment became intolerable, the lecturer lodged a complaint with the Asifnagar police. “Nikhit Reddy was taken into custody by the police but as the boy’s parents assured that he would no longer bother the girl, he was let off in view of his academic career,” police said.

As the management failed to take her complaint seriously, the lecturer quit her job six months back and joined another college at Moinabad.

Though there was no harassment by Nikhit Reddy since the past six months, on Thursday he went to the hostel where the lecturer stays and insisted that she accept his proposal.

The lecturer, in her complaint to the police, stated that Nikhit Reddy threatened to throw acid on her face, if she did not accept his love.

When asked how he fell in love with a lecturer, Nikhit Reddy retorted: “Is a lecturer not a human being.” He, however, claimed that he did not harass the lecturer.

“I proposed to her long back and I did not even meet her for the past six months. I just wanted to know her reply,” he added.

Police arrested Nikhit Reddy under Section 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman) and sent him to judicial remand.
