Student dies nine months after attack

Chennai, June 22: A second year undergraduate student of engineering who had been in coma for the last nine months, after being attacked by his classmate, died here on Sunday.

Sriperumbudur police have registered a case of murder against the student who is absconding.

According to Prem Anand Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram, the deceased R. Rajkumar (20), a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering in a private college, and his classmate Parthiban of Karaikudi had a scuffle last September. Parthiban hit him with a wooden plank.

“Rajkumar’s friendship with a few mechanical engineering students, who were his hostelmates, irked Parthiban,” he said.

Rajkumar was admitted to Sri Ramachandra hospital. His uncle N. Murugesan lodged a complaint with the Sriperumbudur police, who registered a case of attempt to murder against Parthiban and the college authorities suspended him.

The victim was still in coma when he was discharged from the hospital last November.

He was brought to his brother’s house on South Mada Street, Villivakkam. Around 4.30 a.m. on Sunday Rajkumar died.

Eyes donated

Rajkumar’s family donated his eyes before the post-mortem at the Government General Hospital.
