Strong quake shakes Indonesian island

Jakarta, November 09: A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has shaken the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, with initial reports saying some buildings were damaged in the region.

The US Geological Survey reported on Monday that the quake struck in the early hours with its epicenter about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the town of Raba.

There had been reports of panic in the areas where a strong tremor was felt, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The Indonesian crisis center said they were checking reports that some walls of houses had collapsed.

Indonesia is situated in an area of intense seismic activity and was the worst-hit country in the 2004 Asian tsunami.
