Strong earthquake jolts Pakistan, Afghanistan

Islamabad, October 23: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 to 6.4 on the Richter scale has rattled neighbor countries Afghanistan and Pakistan, swaying buildings in both Kabul and Islamabad.

Geological centers said the earthquake at 12:21 am (1951 GMT Thursday) was centered in the mountains about 167 miles (268 kilometers) northeast of Kabul and 140 miles (230 kilometers) west of Mingaora, Pakistan.

The quake shook ground and electricity supplies were reportedly disrupted in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The tremor also shook buildings in the Pakistani cities of Peshawar and the capital Islamabad, sending frightened people into the streets and open spaces

The quake was also felt as far east as Lahore near the Indian border.

The word of any damage or casualties in mountainous parts of both countries could be slow to reach the outside world.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Kashmir and northwest Pakistan left 74,000 people dead in October 2005.
