Hyderabad, June 13: Junior doctors of Gandhi Hospital who intensified their protests on the third day of their strike on Friday tasted the wrath of motorists who took strong objection to the medicos blocking the road in front of the hospital on Friday.
Motorists, who were stranded because of the doctors staging a sit-in on the road, vent their anger at the striking employees for trying to disrupt traffic flow. Total chaos prevailed as traffic was blocked up to Musheerabad crossroads and beyond.
Police intervened and took the junior doctors into preventive custody when the situation threatened to go out of control.
Earlier, medicos took out a rally on the hospital premises, raising slogans against the government’s insensitivity to take action against the people who had attacked doctors working in the labour ward three days ago.
Nearly 150 junior doctors, who participated in the strike and burnt the effigy of chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, demanded the superintendent of the hospital to come out in the open and condemn the attack.
Angered over the police taking the medicos into custody, state president of Junior Doctors Association (Juda) B Y Praveen Kumar arrived at the Gandhi Hospital and said doctors across the state would boycott emergency services if the arrested ones were not released within 15 minutes.
The doctors were released later after Praveen Kumar had a telephonic conversation with deputy commissioner of police, north zone, Swathi Lakra.
The junior doctors said their strike would continue until those responsible for the attack on the doctors are arrested.
“The government should tell us when the accused will be arrested. The government initially requested 24 hours but it was later extended to 48 hours. The culprits are yet to be arrested,” Praveen Kumar said.
