Striking jewellers association members meet Rahul

New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today met representatives of jewellers associations from across the country which have been demanding withdrawal of excise duty on jewellery, imposed in the Union Budget 2016-17.

“Met representatives of Jewellers Associations from various parts of the country.

“They expressed their concern that excise duty on jewellery will impact small businesses & destroy livelihoods of lakhs of karigars & artisans (sic),” he said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Jewellers and bullion traders across the country went on with their strike for the 10th straight day today demanding rollback of the proposed excise duty on non-silver jewellery items.

Members of Parliament of all hue have been raising the issue in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for the past few days in the wake of continued shutdown by jewellers.
