Srinagar, March 14: Normal life was disrupted today at Shopian which observed a strike in response to a call by a local outfit to protest the “highhandedness” of police whom it accused of roughing up a relative of the two alleged rape and murder victims of the south Kashmir town.
Shops and business establishments, which usually remain open in the town on Sundays, were closed and there was little traffic on the roads.
Shopian, 52 kms from here, witnessed violent protests last evening after police arrested and allegedly roughed up in the lock-up Shakeel Ahmad Ahanger, husband of Neelofar and brother of Asiya, the two women whose death sparked off massive protests across Kashmir last year.
