Stranded A.P. NRI’s on way to India

Hyderabad, June 29: NRI’s belonging to Nizamabad and Kareemanagar numbering 119 who were stranded in Bahrain for the past two years, ultimately got permission to come back to India. They have won the case in the court of Bahrain. Abdulah Naaz construction company of Bahrain had recruited 128 workers from India during 2003 and 2006 but they were not being paid the promised salaries.

Due to this reason many workers left their jobs and they were working with other companies. Govt. of Bahrain declared general clemency for all the foreign workers and they were exempted from imprisonment and imposition of fine.

In order to escape from clemency, they approached Indian Embassy at Manama. The Indian Mission issued them emergency certificates to facilitate them to return to India but Bahrain immigration officials detained them by saying that they are blacklisted on a complaint lodged by the company that on account of their leaving the company it incurred huge losses.

The company imposed a fine of 497 Bahrain Dinar (equivalent to Rs. 70,000) each on every worker. The court of Bahrain accepted the plea of the company and imposed the fine. They were not allowed to leave Bahrain without paying the fine.

The relatives of these workers in Kareemnagar and Nizamabad represented the matter to TRS Chief Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao who referred the issue to Dr. Manmohan Singh. Meanwhile Mr. Narayan Swamy, President Migrants ‘Rights Council’ Mahboobnagar filed a Public Interest Litigation petition in the High Court of A.P. Division Bench comprising Justice Nisar Ahmed Kukroo and Justice Afzalpurkar directed the union Ministry of Overseas Affairs to take serious action to settle this issue. The Indian Mission took up the case seriously and got the justice done to these workers.
