Stone pelting in Muslim areas of Gulbarga during Bandh yesterday

Hyderabad: During Bharat Bandh which was organized by AITUC yesterday, in densely populated Muslim areas of Gulbarga City such as Mohammed Rafi Chowk to Tippu Sultan Chowk, protesters pelted stones on autorikshaw. Some of the Muslims tried to pacify them saying that they should not throw stones at the autorikshaw since Muslim women are travelling through them but the protesters did not stop their activities. The angry Muslim youths caught hold of two protesters and beat them. The two protestors fled away from the spot. Some of the miscreants tried to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in Muslim areas but when Muslim youths chased them, they ran away. One of the protestors left his motorcycle which was seized by the police.

Mr. Wajid Patel, Circle Inspector of Police of Gramin Police Station and Mr. Satish, Circle Inspector of Police of Bahmanipura have assured that the culprits would soon be arrested after filing FIR. Meanwhile, Mr. Syed Mazher Husain, President of Muslim Welfare Association reached the spot. After his arrival more than 2000 Muslim youths reached the ring road which blocked Tippu Sultan Chowk area. Some of the concerned citizens contacted Mr. Qamarul Islam, Minister-in-Charge of Gulbarga and Chairman of Kulbargi Urban Development Authority. On his instructions, DSP, Addl. DSP, Five Circle Inspectors and other police officials reached the spot. Some of the protesters pelted stones on police vans. Police had to resort to lathi charge. All the shops from Tippu Sultan Chowk to Rafi Chowk were close down. After some time, the mob dispersed and all the roads were open. Two police vans have been placed near Sana Hotel.

It may be worth noting that violence broke out when some agitators pelted stones on autorikshaws in which Muslim women were travelling and despite admonition by the Muslim youths, the protesters did not stop their activities. Due to the timely intervention of Mr. Qamarul Islam, Police controlled the situation.
