Srinagar, April 25: Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq today faced a tough time when he visited a mosque in Habba Kadal area here as some persons threw stones at his supporters outside the complex.
Some persons threw stones at Mirwaiz’s supporters outside the mosque in the Civil Line area in Habba Kadal when he went there for ongoing Milad celebrations, sources said.
They said that supporters of the Mirwaiz, who heads the moderate faction of Hurriyat, had to call their men from downtown who later escorted him back safely.
Police intervened in time and prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn.
The area is a stronghold of Masrat Alam of Hurriyat Conference faction led by hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Alam continues to be under detention and the stone-pelters were suspected to be his supporters, sources said.
