Stepdad raped daughter, held

Auckland, July 13: A man who raped his former stepdaughter repeatedly, dominating her psychologically before kidnapping and beating her with wood and iron bars, has been sent to jail for 15 years.

The High Court at Auckland was told the abuse began when the man was living in Nelson in the early 2000s and going out with the girl’s mother. The 54-year-old man cannot be named for fear it would identify the girl.

Justice Toogood said the abuse began with indecent assault when the girl was 10.

The first rape happened in Stoke in 2005 when the girl was 13. She said she was raped and forced to perform oral sex on the man every time she visited her step-sister at the man’s home.

The man pleaded guilty to 33 charges, including rape, sexual violation, indecent assault, threatening to kill, injuring, kidnapping and assault and an indecent act on a girl aged under 12.

Justice Toogood declined preventive detention and began with a starting point of 19 to 20 years. He deducted five years for the guilty plea and sent the man to jail for 15 years with a minimum sentence of nine years.
