Steep rise in prices of fruits and vegetables in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The soaring prices of fruits and vegetables during the last two weeks have put the household budget in a state of disarray.

Vegetables which were selling for between Rs 14 and Rs 20 per kg two weeks ago in the open market are now being sold at Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg.

The prices of the humble tomato soared since last fortnight disrupting middle class household budget in Hyderabad.

Tomatoes, most of the widely consumed vegetables that was available at Rs 20-30 per kg have now touch Rs 70 per kg marked.

Similarly, the rates of some of vegetables like beans, chillies, capsicum are also selling at double market price. chillies, which was at Rs 60-a-kg, is now have touched Rs 90-a-kg while capsicum at Rs 39-a-kg.

Even the prices of seasonal fruits are skyrocketing. The fruit vendors prefer to throw it rather than selling by reducing the price.

The sudden increase in prices of fruits and vegetables have seriously hit the middle income group and lower income group, particularly affecting those below the poverty line who are finding it difficult to manage the household budget.
