Stay order for Lara Dutta-starrer

Mumbai, June 16: Yesterday, the Bombay High Court stayed the release of BR Films’ Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai. The film has been embroiled in a legal tussle after 20th Century Fox dragged the producers to court for allegedly remaking their 1992 film, My Cousin Vinny.

Justice AP Deshpande adjourned the hearing till June 29 and has instructed BR Films not to release the film till June 30. 20th Century Fox has sought damages for $ 1.4 million and an injunction against the release of Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai. This is the first time that a Hollywood film studio has taken a Bollywood filmmaker to court over remaking their film.

While Fox admitted they had given permission to BR Films to make a film loosely based on the Oscar winning movie, they say that they had not parted with the rights of a Hindi remake. But, on reading the script, they found that it’s a ‘substantial reproduction’ of the original film.

BR Films states that Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai is an original film. The film is directed by Ravi Chopra and stars Lara Dutta, Boman Irani, Govinda and Tabu.
