State to start KV-type model schools next year

Hyderabad, April 06: The state government has decided to start model schools in 21 districts on the lines of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) with the aim of improving female literacy in educationally backward blocks (EBB) of Andhra Pradesh.

The government identified about 737 EBBs in over 1124 mandals of the state and along with the School Education Department it has decided to establish 355 models schools under the centrally sponsored Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyaan (RMSA).

The schools will be run as per the standards of KVs and will offer secondary school education i.e from 6th to 12th standard, exclusively in English medium. Only Hyderabad and East Godavari districts will not come under the purview of this decision.

“In each mandal, an area of 5 acres has already been allotted by the government and an amount of `3.02 crore has been set aside for the infrastructure,” said Dr Ravikanth, the state-in-charge of Model Schools.

Thrust will be given on sports and other extra-curricular activities besides regular academics.

“There will be sufficient scope for sports, recreation and outdoor activities with facilities like auditorium, playground, gardens, internet connectivity, libraries and full-time computer teachers,” added Ravikanth.

These schools will be open from the upcoming academic year and run through temporary accommodations until the proposed infrastructure is ready. For effective teaching, the teacher-students ratio will be 1:40.

Two sections of class VI will begin from June with a total strength of 80 students in all the identified districts under the KV concept.

The admission will be as per the norms of Right to Education Act (RTE), that is, the name of the students will picked through a lottery.
