State files SLP in Supreme Court over DGP’s row

The Andhra Pradesh Government on Wednesday filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court orders upholding the Central Administrative Tribunal’s (CAT) decision to set aside the appointment of Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy as the Head of Police Force (HoPF).

In the Special Leave Petition, the State Government appealed to the apex court to quash the High Court orders by on the grounds that Dinesh Reddy was appointed on the post based on his tenure.

It may be recalled that a few days back the state High Court had set aside Dinesh Reddy’s appointment and directed the government to adhere to CAT’s order and send a new list of senior-most IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) within two weeks facilitating the appointment of new DGP. The Court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the government for filing a petition.

Disposing a petition filed by IPS officer Gautam Kumar, who challenged that the government has violated merit and seniority prescribed by Central government in the appointment of top post, the High court bench declared the appointment of Dinesh Reddy on the top post of DGP as ‘invalid’.

The court asked the government to continue present DGP Dinesh Reddy as in-charge DGP till alternative arrangements are made.
