Hyderabad, June 30: Exuding confidence that the ruling Congress would win the coming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, likely to take place in Aug, Union Minister and in charge of AP affairs M Veerappa Moily Monday said the party State unit was free to choose its allies in the polls.
After a good performance in the Central and State elections that ensured its return to power, the party was well on its way to repeating the show in the GHMC and other local body polls, he claimed at a press conference following a PCC meeting at Gandhi Bhavan.
PCC president D Srinivas said three special election coordinators had been appointed for the GHMC polls. “I am confident that the Congress will win more than 50 percent seats i.e. 75-plus in the GHMC polls. I have asked the cadre to work in a coordinated manner,” he said.
The PCC chief said MPs, MLAs and MLCs representing Greater Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medak districts and the ministers concerned had discussed poll-related issues at the meeting. Replying to a query, he said poll alliances would be decided after consulting local leaders and studying the prevailing situation.
Apart from holding public meetings, the party cadre had been instructed to interact with voters at a personal level to win their confidence.
Mayoral candidate issue was not discussed at the meeting, he said.
Brushing aside media reports of `ruckus’ at the party’s review meetings organised by him in some districts recently, he claimed that except for Adilabad, there were no incidents.
