Star-studded Haji Ali promenade revamp soon

Mumbai, June 06: After nearly a year-and-a-half of delays, the work on revamping the Haji Ali promenade with structures in the shapes of the zodiac signs will finally begin.

The BMC and state government are ready to invite architects and designers from across the world to recreate the Haji Ali promenade.

“We will soon call for global tenders for this project,” confirmed M K Srivastava, Secretary (special projects) who is one of the men behind the revamp.

As per this Rs 25 crore plan, the BMC will extend the existing promenade with semi-circular curves at 12 places.

The seating arrangement, along with trees and shrubs behind this extended portion, will be shaped like zodiac signs.

Red and yellow coloured paver tiles, fibre seats and coloured lights will also be installed to give the promenade a new look.

Unforeseen delays

According to a senior BMC official, “This project was stuck for a long time as several other projects came up which needed to be completed immediately. The economic crisis too affected the progress of the project.”

Bench with(out) a view

In order to retain the beauty of the view of the sea from the promenade, the state government is contemplating building an underground tunnel instead of the Rs 1,200 crore Worli Haji Ali sea link. The sea link would hamper the view, as it would extend 3.6 km into the sea.
